Merry Christmas, Baby
Au cours des mois
qui précèdent sa disparition, Otis Redding continue d'enregistrer à un
rythme soutenu dans les studios Stax à Memphis. Il est probable
qu'un disque de Noël a été programmé par les dirigeants de la firme pour
la fin de l'année, car le Big O met en boîte White Christmas et
Merry Christmas Baby pendant l'été 1967, mais l'accident qui lui
coûte la vie remet en cause ce projet. Lorsque Stax et
Atlantic se séparent au printemps suivant, les bandes reviennent au
second qui profite du mythe Redding, né avec Dock Of The Bay
au lendemain de sa mort, pour publier quantité d'inédits, dont Merry
Christmas, Baby qui sort en 45-tours pour Noël 1968. Le choix de ce
titre est inattendu, Redding ayant une personnalité aussi flamboyante
que celle de Charles Brown, le créateur de Merry Christmas Baby, est feutrée. Admirateur de Nat King Cole et inspirateur de Ray
Charles, Brown a été au cours des années 40 l'un des artistes les plus
en vue du R&B californien, obtenant une douzaine de hits nationaux à la
tête de son trio dirigé par le guitariste Johnny Moore. Un jour de 1947,
un ami de Brown nommé Lou Baxter lui propose de lui acheter ce blues de
Noël car il a besoin d'argent pour faire face à des frais médicaux.
Amélioré par Johnny Moore, Merry Christmas Baby a donné à
Brown l'un de ses grands succès, repris par la suite par l'orchestre de
Lionel Hampton.
